Estate Gardener/Horticultural Assistant
Job Description
The Estate Gardener and horticultural assistant is a hands-on position assisting in the cultivation and care of the gardens and grounds of a growing estate garden. The successful applicant should be able to work independently and as a team, collaborating with existing garden staff, outside contractors and consultants and assist with planning, planting, weeding, mulching and other horticultural tasks.

Caretakers of a picturesque, private, historic waterfront estate in the greater Annapolis area featuring bay views, formal and informal garden areas, open lawns, meadows, and mature trees. We are actively expanding and enhancing garden spaces while preserving the natural and historical character of the property.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Maintain and care for a variety of plantings, exercising the highest horticultural standards. Plant, prune, mulch, and weed varied plantings. Monitor plant and soil conditions, water, fertilize, and undertake other cultural remedies as needed. Scout for pest and disease concerns and administer or arrange for corrective treatments. Assist in the planning of seasonal displays and permanent garden areas.
The Estate Gardener/Horticultural Assistant will work under the direction of the estate Horticulturist on a full-time basis during the season, April - December, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Weekends or extended hours may be required.
Experience and Qualifications:
2-3 years of professional gardening experience, some formal training, estate or botanic garden preferred
Ability to assess complex plantings, determine and execute maintenance needs such as plant, weed and pest identification; perennial and woody plant maintenance; and irrigation/water monitoring and management.
Ability to operate small machinery, including utility vehicles, push mowers, blowers, string trimmers, chainsaws, and other landscape tools.
Willingness and ability to work outdoors in all conditions, including wet, dry, hot and cold conditions
Ability to safely lift, carry, push and/or pull 50 lbs
Maryland pesticide applicator’s license is a plus
Possess a working knowledge of Microsoft 365
Must have good people skills, a committed work ethic, and willingness to work in a collaborative & congenial manner as a team player
Must have a clean driver’s license and have own reliable transportation
Employment conditioned on consent to a background check
