Your New Role
As a
permanent, full-time, Park Ranger 1, you will play a key role in protecting, maintaining, and operating state park lands within the Umpqua Management Unit. In this position, you will perform and oversee a wide range of tasks to care for natural and cultural resources, park structures, facilities, equipment, and operational systems.
You will use skills across multiple building and maintenance trades, including carpentry, electrical, plumbing, painting, and landscape maintenance. The role also requires specialized program skills such as resource interpretation, cultural and natural resource restoration, utility infrastructure operation, and park rule enforcement. Your work ensures the safe, efficient, and enjoyable operation of Oregon Parks and Recreation Department (OPRD) programs and properties.

Minimum Qualifications
- Two years of visitor services experience (e.g. rule enforcement; interpretation such as education and environmental awareness programs; special events and activities; etc.) AND/OR maintenance experience (e.g., construction trades, landscaping). OR
- An Associate's degree in Park and Recreation Administration or Natural Resource Management or Environmental Studies and 6 months of visitor services experience (e.g. rule enforcement; interpretation such as education and environmental awareness programs; special events and activities; etc.) AND/OR maintenance experience (e.g., construction trades, landscaping).
- NOTE: A higher level degree may substitute for the Associate's degree. There is no substitute for the 6 months experience.
Special Requirements
- To be hired, a criminal record and driving record check must be completed that meets OPRD Criteria at the time of hire, and throughout employment while also maintaining a valid driver’s license.
Desired Attributes
- Skill and knowledge of working as part of a team in basic park resource and facility operations and maintenance and/or resource interpretation.
- Skill in maintaining composure and taking appropriate action during emergency or emotionally charged situations.
- Skill in evaluating situations, applying rules and guidelines, determining and carrying out appropriate course of action to achieve desired results.
- Skill in resolving customer complaints related to overnight camping and park rule interpretation.
- Skill in the safe use of tools, material and equipment associated with landscape, building, facility and utility system maintenance.
- Skill in performing basic plumbing, carpentry, painting, grounds-keeping tasks.
- Skill in the use of a personal computer.
