Description
Under immediate supervision, performs routine semi-skilled grounds maintenance work and related work as required.
Examples of Duties
Operates walk behind mowers, zero turn mowers and tractors in the mowing of right-of-ways and parks. Use of weed trimmers, edgers and blowers. Distribute herbicide, fertilizer and mulch. Remove weeds from beds. Plant bulbs, flowers, shrubs and trees on city maintained property. Trim and prune shrubs and trees. Prep soil for seeding. Collection and removal of litter. Operate water truck. Perform pre-trip inspection of vehicle and equipment. Uses standard tools and equipment of trade; cleans and cares for tools and equipment.
Typical Qualifications
Education and Experience: Any combination of education and experience equivalent to the completion of the eleventh grade and experience in building and grounds maintenance work.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: General knowledge of the methods and practices of buildings and grounds maintenance. Knowledge of equipment and tools used in turf and landscape maintenance. Ability to follow instructions and satisfactorily complete assigned tasks in a timely manner; ability to work long hours under sometimes adverse weather conditions.
Physical Requirements
This work requires the regular exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work frequently standing, walking, using hands to finger, handle or feel, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling and lifting and occasionally requires sitting, speaking or hearing and repetitive motions; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arm’s length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires exposure to vibration, frequently requires working near moving mechanical parts, working in high, precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment and occasionally requires exposure to the risk of electrical shock and exposure to wildlife; work is generally in a very loud noise location (e.g. jack hammer work, garbage recycle plant).
