About the opportunity:
As the company’s newest Landscape Manager, your primary goal is to make sure our clients are
thrilled with the work your team does.
The right person for this position is someone with
extensive landscaping, or horticultural experience; someone who has
led a bilingual English/Spanish-speaking team and who wants to serve as “La Jefa” or “El Jefe.”
Ideally, he/they/she has worked on landscaping- and hardscaping-related projects in
Northern California and understands the equipment and crew needed to plant, maintain or remove a wide variety of species ranging from shrubs, hedges, and screens to perennials, grasses, flowers, and trees.
Our new Landscape Manager will be an experienced mentor/coach, good with training her/his employees on landscaping techniques including P.H.C. (Plant Health Care), able to learn new software systems, familiar with working in a landscaping industry environment, orderly enough to keep their yard area shipshape, and able to respond to emergency calls as needed.

Since 1980, The Professional Tree Care Company has been trusted for tree services throughout Northern California. Based in Berkeley, Ca, we service commercial, residential, and public works projects from Mendocino to Monterey, and from San Francisco to Sacramento.
What makes us unique? Aside from having the staff and equipment to take on tree work of any size, we recycle 100% of material removed from job sites at our own Green Waste Recycle Yard, (see greenwasterecycleyard dot com). We also mill logs into dimensional lumber, build outdoor furniture from logs, create wood chips, mulch, and electricity from mulch in cooperations with All Power Labs.
Qualifications:
- Industry Experience. You have worked in the landscaping industry for 3+ years, ideally as a Landscape Manager or Foreman/Foreperson.
- People management skills and experience. You’re a natural mentor/trainer who enjoys helping others advance their professional careers by your efforts. You routinely give out praise with an “Atta boy!” or “’Atta girl!” when deserved, know how to give constructive criticism in private, value a culture of accountability and optimism in which everyone on the clock is as productive as possible
- Communication skills. The ability to communicate effectively and professionally including email, team announcements in both English and Spanish. (Being bilingual is a MUST for this role.)
- Strong computer literacy with proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, etc.) Familiarity with calendar management, clerical tasks, and able to learn billing and timekeeping software. You will create your own estimates and be responsible for delivering them to clients
- Customer-facing experience. You’ve worked with clients, contractors, sub-contractors, etc.
- Hardworking. The person we hire will always be available by phone as needed
- Clean CA DL You have a clean and current California Driver’s License and will be able to drive a company vehicle to job sites. Experience hauling a trailer is a plus
- Physically fit and able to hustle. Our LM must be able to work at a brisk pace at least 6+ hours per day. They must also be able to ascend/descend stairs, tromp through forests, vineyards, and/or wilderness to evaluate projects, and lift equipment that weighs +/-40 pounds onto truck beds
- Neat: If your garage is highly organized, this may be your dream job. You’ll oversee ensuring that every facet of your stockrooms, storage area, team vehicles, and the yard are well organized
- Sense of humor. When projects get stressful, we’ll rely on your corny jokes to break the tension
- ABW/Always Be Working. The candidate we hire is someone who moves quickly, gets a great deal of work done, and uses software or a demonstrated system to track tasks/daily to-dos. They have a good sense of what it takes to keep an entire team running efficiently and know when to request assistance
- Authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship
Bonus points for:
- Experience with Microsoft Project or another project scheduling software that can be used for tree care projects
- Having a better than average memory is a HUGE plus
- College degree is a plus. Especially, construction management, accounting, or business. Please highlight your education to indicate when you graduated, and the degree earned, if any.

Responsibilities:
- Serve as your team’s point of contact for our clients, landscape foreman/fore-people, the billing/job costing group, arborists/estimators, your recruiting team, our residential scheduler, and CEO
- Line your crew out daily: Meet them each morning to outline the day’s work. Produce and distribute work production/progress reports to foremen/fore-people
- Visit client’s properties throughout the Greater Bay Area as assigned by our Scheduler to develop project estimates, maintenance contracts, and special projects bids
- Walk clients through solutions to landscaping issues and/or proactively suggest P.H.C. (Plant Health Care) measures that could solve their issues
- Work alongside our Plant Health Care Specialist to ensure you are up to date on the most recent non-toxic solutions we have to offer
- Interview and train the staff you oversee
- Lead safety meetings and serve as the point-person for field-related training
- Train staff on plant identification, pruning techniques, fertilization practices and P.H.C. (Plant Health Care) solutions that may include low-toxicity pesticides.
- HR-related: interview crew candidates, write performance reviews, coach team members who are lacking specific hard or soft skills, and serve as the point-person for all H.R. or payroll-related issues including helping train crew to use the time-keeping application on their phone
- Working on special projects as requested by the CEO
Who Should NOT APPLY:
- Folks who do not have either: 1) LANDSCAPING industry experience or 2) HARDSCAPING experience
- Anyone living farther than 45 minutes away from our site at 2550 Garden Tract Road, Richmond, CA
- Late night-ers. Your start time is 6:15 a.m. on site, so you’ll need to arrive by +/- 6:00 A.M. and may need to hold phone meetings with our CEO even earlier
- People who do not have a CURRENT and CLEAN CALIFORNIA driver’s license, cannot drive or don’t have transportation to remote sites: forests, fields, streams, etc
- Anyone uncomfortable using a port-a-potty as their primary loo
