Hiring Range: $88,000 – $110,000 (based on experience)
The City of Newport News is seeking an experienced and motivated leader to oversee Landscape Services, Athletic Fields, and Maintenance Operations within Parks Development, Operations, and Animal Services. This role provides strategic direction, operational oversight, and technical expertise to ensure safe, high‑quality, and well‑maintained City parks, athletic fields, rights‑of‑way, and landscaped areas.
Key Responsibilities:
• Manage and coordinate landscape, athletic field, and maintenance operations to meet departmental standards.
• Develop and implement strategic plans, policies, and operational procedures.
• Oversee maintenance, repair, and construction of parks, turf, trees, irrigation systems, and landscaped spaces.
• Identify safety concerns and operational gaps; implement corrective actions and improvement strategies.
• Supervise division managers and administrative staff, including hiring, performance management, and staff development.
• Support disciplinary processes through investigations, documentation, and coaching supervisors.
• Assist with annual operating and capital budgets, financial tracking, and purchasing.
• Oversee capital projects and resource management initiatives; coordinate with contractors and City departments.
• Respond to public inquiries and represent the department at meetings and community events.
Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree in Horticulture, Landscape Architecture, Arboriculture, Parks and Recreation, or a related field.
• 5–7 years of related experience, including 3–4 years of supervisory experience.
• Experience in landscaping or parks maintenance preferred.
