POSITION SUMMARY:Under general supervision performs work of routine difficulty in the care and maintenance of trees from the ground level on city streets and in park areas; performs related duties as may be required.

Essential Job Functions

Services trees from ground level by pruning and trimming.
Traces and paints tree wounds.
Balls, burlaps, plants, transplants, prunes and mulches trees and shrubs.
Waters, fertilizes, and sprays trees and shrubs for insect and disease control.
Installs tree wrap, stakes and braces.
Fells and removes small trees.
Ties various knots and coordinates ropes at the ground level in tree removal and/or tree trimming operations.
Cuts and stacks logs and piles brush.
Loads and unloads brush and logs.
Mows grass and rotivates ground as necessary.
Operates a variety of tools and equipment, including but not limited to, chain saws, shovels, pole saws, pole pruners, speed loader, stumper, auger, chipper, sprayers, portable generator, trucks, tractors and related tree planting equipment.
Performs preventive maintenance on equipment as directed.
May provide work direction to a small crew of seasonal employees.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge Of

The tools and equipment used in tree maintenance work.
The methods, practices and techniques of tree maintenance from the ground level, including pruning, planting, repair and removal methods and techniques.
Hazards and safety precautions of the work.

Skill in:

The use of a variety of equipment and ropes used in tree maintenance.
Pruning and planting trees and shrubs.
Understanding and following verbal and written directions.
Moving and lifting heavy objects.
Working and communicating effectively with others.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND CERTIFICATIONS:

Ability to read at the 9th grade level.
One (1) year of experience in the care and maintenance of trees.
Must have a valid driver's license.
Must be able to properly lift objects weighing up to approximately ninety (90) lbs.
Must obtain within probationary period a valid State of Ohio Class A Commercial Driver's License without restriction as to the operation of vehicles with air brakes.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:The physical demands described within this job description must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. This employee will frequently lift, push, pull, carry, climb and/or move up to 50-100 pounds. Frequent stooping, kneeling, crawling and crouching may occur with this position. In this position, the work is predominately outside. This employee will frequently handle simple and power grasping chainsaws, bucket operation and speed loaders. The noise level in the work environment is very loud. This employee will be exposed to dust and fumes, poor ventilation, gases and other toxic/caustic chemicals frequently.
